Family Room Design Board

Saturday, October 4, 2014

Way back in the beginning of the summer (June maybe?) I said I would post a picture of the design board I made for the interior design camp I participated in at my local community college. I know, I know, it has been like three months! But I won’t keep you in suspense any longer, here it is!

Decorative Pillow Tutorial

Thursday, June 19, 2014

As I promised a while ago, here is a full tutorial for a decorative pillow! Keep in mind, this is technically a pillow cover, because it involves an already-purchased pillow insert! So here goes…

Design Dreams

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

So a few weeks ago, I mentioned that I really started to love interior design about two or three years ago. And of course, I wanted to get into a little more detail than that! For as long as I can remember, I have liked “pretty rooms” in houses. When I went trick or treating, one of my favorite parts was to see the different chandeliers in each of the houses. When I was at hotels, I would notice the unique flooring or the lighting. Eventually, I started getting more and more into it. At that point, I started an interior design journal. My first entry was on May 12, 2012. Technically, my first six entries were on that day :)They weren’t really very detailed. The first thing I wrote were my “design faves.” These included:

  • big, glass windows
  • recess lights
  • built-in cabinets
  • crystal chandeliers
  • modern antique style
I know these aren’t very detailed, but they were just design terms that I had heard and thought were cool! Two of the other entries included print-outs from different design websites. I’m not even sure what websites because I didn’t write them down, but the title was “Getting Started–Inside Your Home.” It basically explains the basic steps on designing your home by yourself. The 3rd and 4th entries are basic sketches of what I wanted my bedroom and office to be like at the time. The drawings are awful, not to scale, and not detailed at all, but I still love them because they’re the first design drawings I’ve ever done!

Finally, I had an entry that detailed the first steps of my room redecoration. Yes, I know, it has taken almost two years to get my room to the way I want it :) Anyways, it just listed what would go where all throughout my room, things that I wanted to keep, and things that I wanted to change.
Since I started my design journal, I definitely have not written in it consistently! After the May 12, 2012 entries, I wrote about five more entries the entire year. Then in 2013, I wrote a little bit more, including more details notes and sketches for my room redesign. I also wrote my design plans for my younger cousins bedroom, but not much. Finally, on March 16, 2014, I really started writing in my design journal. I use it for design ideas, blog plans, and quick sketches!

If you are trying to get involved in interior design, I would definitely recommend starting a design journal!
Overall, I think I have grown a lot “design-wise.” I used to just say, “I like big glass windows and pretty chandeliers.” Now, I am starting to define my own design style and form my styling tastes. I want to expand on this even more, and my high school actually offers an opportunity to do this! During my senior year, I will be participating in the intern/mentor program! I get early release for the last period and go to a design firm for an internship! I am so excited for it, and I can’t wait (as you can probably tell by all the exclamation points)! Plus, I hope to do the NYSID Pre-College program, or some program like that during the summer of 2015 or 2016. Over the last two or three years, my love of design has only gotten stronger, and I really think this is what I will be doing as a career!

Building Your Own Shelves

Sunday, June 1, 2014

As you know, there is an entire page on the iDesigns blog dedicated to DIY Designs! Plus, I have a shelf that I built with my Grandpa in my bedroom. So of course, I am a big fan of doing things yourself. Specifically talking about my shelf, I got the inspiration from a model home headboard. When I determined that it wouldn’t work in my bedroom, I changed it to a shelf, and it eventually morphed into the shelf in the photo below!

Design Timeline

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

As you know, I have always loved changing my room around! About three years ago, I got a new desk and dresser, which I still have now. But the redesign really started to take off about two years ago when I repainted my room from green to turquoise. Then came a new bed, a new chair, and new accessories. The final collection of details included a gray tufted headboard, and a custom shelf!
Now I am completely happy with my room! Of course, I’m sure that I will make some small changes over the next few years, but that’s okay :) Over the summer, I am going to get some better accessories for my shelf. The ones I have now are very cheap, and they look like it compared to the two handmade expensive ones I have. I am still in love with my shelf though!

Homestyler Design II

Saturday, April 26, 2014

I know I’ve already gone on and on about how much I love the Homestyler Design app, but I was able to upload another couple of my designs! These to are some of my favorites, and they are both master bedrooms. The first one is mainly blue and yellow, with a couple of brown and turquoise accents. I love the full height fireplace and the wall of curtains and windows. I guess I would call the design as transitional style!

Closet Painting

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

It might sound a little bit strange, but painting your closet is actually a very good idea! For the last ten years, I have had the smallest closet in my house with a wall covered in pencil marks and scratches from when I was little. When I visited a few model homes over last summer and I saw that all the closets were painted, I decided that it was time to paint my own! Not only because painting the back wall a dark color makes the closet seem deeper, but also because it just looks pretty! :)

HGTV Home and Landscape Platinum Suite Review

Sunday, April 13, 2014

A couple of months ago, I saw this design software in Staples, and I immediately knew that I had to have it! I did a little research online and found that it got pretty good reviews. So, I shelled out $50 from my bank account and bought the HGTV Home and Landscape Platinum Suite design software (Version 3). And let me tell you, it has some amazing features! Truly amazing! There is 2,000 item plant encyclopedia, plant growth visualization over time, home and room builder wizards, and even ways to design an energy-efficient home! Based on the features alone, I would give it a 10 out of 10. But then I started using it, and I was SO excited!

Autodesk Homestyler App Review

Thursday, April 10, 2014

Okay, so for probably about the last two or three years, I have been constantly looking for  some sort of home design software or application. About a year ago, I found the Autodesk Homestyler website. It was really cool, but it was pretty difficult to use, especially on the small Chromebook that I had at the time. I made one design with it, and then never used it again.

National Building Museum

Sunday, April 6, 2014

As I said before, I went to the National Building Museum last weekend! It really was beautiful! I know its not really about interior design per se, but the interior was phenomenal! There really isn’t any other word to describe it. Here is one picture that I took of the great hall. There are columns throughout it and it is surrounded by balconies on four floors. Here are a few “fun facts:”
